Don't talk to your friend aloud about finding merchandise cheaper elsewhere.
Don't take photos of things without permission – especially things that are less than $5, or if you are trying to search online to save a $1 somewhere else.
Actually, just don't take photos at all unless you're buying something.
If you know a shop is going to sell things you don't like, don't go inside and make it known you don't like these things. Don't like salad? Don't go to a salad bar.
Think for a minute before you ask a question that you don't really need an answer to.
Small businesses like being paid with cash, no matter how nicely they insist it doesn't matter. Credit card processing fees are small, but they do add up.
If you know 100% you're not going to purchase an item, don't touch it.
Don't read books you aren't going to buy. You're bending the spine and making it unsaleable.
If the employee is nice, be nice back. If they're an asshole, give them a second chance. If they're still an asshole, don't shop there.
If you like a place, tell a friend. Don't wait until a shop has to go out of business to talk about how much you liked it.
Don't complain about hours. Some small businesses are owner-run. Do you work 24/7 365 days a year at your job?
If an employee says "Just let me know if I can be of any help" That doesn't mean you have to say "just looking/no thanks" They are just OFFERING help IF YOU NEED IT. They aren't asking if you need help. There is a difference.
If they greet you with hello, respond. Don't pretend you didn't hear them. Not in the mood? Then don't go shopping.
Don't rely on Yelp as much. Most people use Yelp to complain. Sometimes businesses suck and get better. Decide for yourself.
Don't open things without permission. Again, when you fuck up packaging, no one wants to buy it.
Steal from a big box shop, not from an independent shop.
If you break something and they insist "it's ok" at least buy something else.
Don't read every item description aloud while you shop. Imagine if you had to listen to that everyday.
